Festivities in honor of Our Lady Virgin of the Remedies. April 22nd. It is the traditional descent of the Virgin of Remedies from the Chapel to St. Peter’s Parish, in commemoration of the miracle of healing for those affected by an epidemic of plague in 1579. April 23rd is a local holiday, and celebrates the solemn procession of the patron saint of Cártama, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, through the streets of the town. Highlights on this day are the taking out and bringing in of the Virgin in the Temple. This event is attended by pilgrims and devotees with offerings, often on foot, from the farthest reaches of our geography, not only the province but the rest of Spain and even abroad. The first Sunday of June the «taking up» takes place, the moment when the patroness returns to her hermitage, where she remains until the following year.
In 2002, the Junta de Andalucía declared the festivities in honor of the Virgin of Our Lady of the Remedies of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia, and in 2004 the Hon. Provincial Government of Málaga, a special tourist Singularity.. These celebrations are accompanied by historical cattle fair traditions, where barter and sales take place and which has become a social event of special importance, and a meeting place and reference of the farmers in the province and the region.
