The Region of the Guadalhorce Valley is a place with a high potential for bird watching, housing over 200 species in different habitats in the area. The large number of bird species occurs due to a number of factors that converge in the region, making it an ideal place for hosting every year thousands of individuals:
1.) From the reservoirs of the Guadalhorce River to its mouth, with constant presence of water throughout the year, make Valle del Guadalhorce an optimal place for the movement and settlement of numerous birds of various species.
2.) It works as umbilical cord, a green corridor between the coast and inland areas, which makes communication and exchange among bird populations possible throughout the area of influence of the valley (Torcal de Antequera, Sierra de las Nieves )
3.) The variety of habitats (farmland, rivers, mountains …) implies the existence of a wide variety of birds adapted to each environment.
4.) The location of the region halfway between Africa and Europe.
In addition, the Guadalhorce Valley is one of the major areas of southern Europe for wintering place of the black stork, whose continental population is threatened.
The Region is located practically in the center of the nucleus of Bonelli’s eagle population with the highest known density in Europe.
The type of tourism attracted to the region through bird watching, is an increasingly demanding tourist who seeks expertise in the accommodation so as to receive services that enable the successful development of the activity that has motivated the trip: the observation of birds in a natural environment as rich and varied as the Guadalhorce Valley.
